Kelli O'Hara
Kelli O'Hara — Tony Award-nominated star of the Broadway revival of South Pacific — fills out Playbill.com's questionnaire with random facts, backstage trivia and pop culture tidbits.
Full given name:
Kelli Christine O'Hara — Now it's Kelli O'Hara Naughton :)
Hometown:
Edmond, Oklahoma
Audition song:
It always changes depending on the show. I used to sing a cut song from Sweet Smell of Success a lot. These days, it's anybody's guess.
Special skills:
Well, I think my resume says things like funny faces, high notes, dialects, gymnastics/tumbling, etc. These days, I think my special skill is picking great leading men (on and off the stage).
First Broadway show ever saw:
Master Class
If you could go back in time and catch any Broadway show, what would it be?
South Pacific, of course
Current show you have been recommending to friends:
In the Heights!!!! Wow!
Favorite show tune:
Yikes! I refuse to answer.
Most played song on your iPod:
Something by John Mayer
Last book you read:
"Widow for One Year" - John Irving
Must-see TV show:
"Top Chef"
Last good movie you saw:
"The Visitor" or "Eagle vs. Shark"
Favorite board game:
Scrabble (but I'm pretty bad)
Performer you would drop everything to go see:
Greg Naughton
Pop culture guilty pleasure:
"Friends" I was totally into it. I miss those guys. And "Top Chef"!!!!
First stage kiss:
West Side Story...believe it or not, I actually played "Maria," and I got to kiss the cutest guy in all of Deer Creek High School (see? another good leading man).
Favorite post-show meal:
Anytime (but not too terribly often) I love to go across to Rosa Mexicana with cast members for made-to-order guacamole and pomegranate margaritas. For pre-show meals, I stick with a salad or soup or both...sometimes sushi. I've made the mistake of having chili! Never again.
How you got your Equity card:
My 2nd job after I moved here was a production of the Yeston/Kopit Phantom at the Downtown Cabaret Theatre in Bridgeport CT. They gave me my card, and I loved every minute of it.
Worst missed cue:
Oh, there are many good choices. But the worst was during "Follies" on Broadway. I was thrown on for a role with no rehearsal, obviously feeling like a nervous wreck! Things were going fairly well, and I was down in the quick-change area halfway into my next costume when I heard my cue line over the monitor (I had forgotten a whole scene!). Thankfully, it was Blythe Danner and Treat Williams making up for my absence onstage (they handled it with ease), but I've never gotten over it.
Worst costume ever:
When I was in 5th grade, I played "Jumbo the Elephant" in the school play (No, not Dumbo...Jumbo), and I wore an elephant costume that went embarrassingly well with my chubby body at the time.
Cats or dogs?
I have a black Lab named Ella.
Favorite cereal:
I love oatmeal. But I could go to town on some Cinnamon Life.
Who would play you in the movie?
Wow, I would hope they'd invite me to do that, but if not, then my dream would be Laura Linney.
Worst job you ever had:
I grew up on a farm, and chopping cotton was a big job for my siblings and me. I used to think of it as the worst job in the world...walking up and down the rows of cotton with a hoe, chopping weeds in the hot sun. Ugh. Now, thinking back, I actually love those memories. I used to sing in those aisles.
TV or commercial gig you most enjoyed:
I recently shot a short film industrial directed by Martin Scorsese. It was one of the neatest experiences! It was an Alfred Hitchcock spoof, and I was dressed up as Eva Marie Saint. Simon Baker was my "Carey Grant." See? Another leading man score!
