Playbill Who's Who
NEW YORK THEATRE WORKSHOP

NEW YORK THEATRE WORKSHOP (Producer). Founded in 1979 by Stephen Graham, NYTW produces challenging and unpredictable new theatre that fosters the creative work of artists. The Usual Suspects, NYTW's community of playwrights, directors, designers and actors, explores perspectives on our collective history and responds to the events and institutions that shape our lives. In addition to producing, NYTW supports artists in all stages of their careers by maintaining a series of programs including readings, summer residencies and minority artist fellowships. Jonathan Larson's association with NYTW began when he was invited to join the Usual Suspects. After several years of development, Rent opened at NYTW in January of 1996. Other plays developed at the Workshop include Claudia Shear's Blown Sideways Through Life and Dirty Blonde; Quills by Doug Wright; Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul and Slavs!; and John Guare's Lydie Breeze, Parts One and Two. Caryl Churchill has long been associated with the Workshop, and in 1996, NYTW began working with internationally renowned director Ivo van Hove. The success of Rent has given NYTW the opportunity to purchase its theatre and rehearsal spaces in the East Village and to adopt a bold plan that envisions expanding the organization's artistic mandate. In 1991 NYTW received an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement and in 2000 was designated to be part of the Leading National Theatres Program by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
