Boublil, Schönberg, Kretzmer and Legrand's Marguerite to Play London's Theatre Royal Haymarket

Les Misérables creators Herbert Kretzmer, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg are to take their latest project, Marguerite, to the Theatre Royal, Haymarket next year with Ruthie Henshall in the title role.

According to the Daily Mail, Marguerite, which features music by Amour's Michel Legrand and lyrics by Kretzmer, will arrive at the West End venue May 6, 2008, as part of a three-show season to be directed by Jonathan Kent.

As well as directing, Kent collaborated with Boublil and Schönberg on the libretto for the new show, in which Julian Ovenden (who played Joseph Keyston in Butley) may play opposite Henshall if his filming commitments permit. The two performers recently workshopped the musical in London.

The romance resets Alexander Dumas' La Dame aux Camellias in occupied Paris during the Second World War. Marguerite is a famous courtesan who has taken up with a Nazi officer when she falls for Armand (Ovenden), a young pianist who is in the French Resistance.

Henshall made her professional debut in A Chorus Line, and her other West End credits include The Woman in White, Cats, Miss Saigon, Les Misérables, Oliver!, Crazy for You, She Loves Me, Peggy Sue Got Married and Chicago. She received Olivier Award nominations for her work in Crazy for You and Chicago, and nabbed the Olivier for her performance in She Loves Me.

In New York, Henshall was seen in Chicago, Miss Saigon, Putting It Together and the City Center Encores! stagings of Ziegfeld Follies of 1936 and Stairway to Paradise. Her solo albums are entitled "Pilgrim," "The Ruthie Henshall Album" and "Love Is Here to Stay."

With a cast of 16 - to be announced - and ten or 11 musicians, the show is a smaller scale work than such previous Boublil and Schonberg epics as Les Miz, Miss Saigon and the recent, short-lived Broadway musical The Pirate Queen.
