Marie Antoinette: The Color of Flesh Opens Off-Broadway July 10

The New York return of Joel Gross' Marie Antoinette: The Color of Flesh officially opens Off-Broadway July 10 at St. Lukes Theatre.

Robert Kalfin stages the fictional account based on the infamous French queen, which began performances June 26. Briana Seferian and Earl Productions produce the open-ended Off-Broadway run.

Marie Antoinette was previously seen by New York audiences in 2007 at the 45th Street Theatre. The St. Lukes run reunites the original cast, including Samantha Ives, Amanda Jones and Jonathan Kells Phillips, with the addition of Hugo Salazar, Jr.

Marie Antoinette spans 20 years and tells of a "fictionalized love triangle between Queen Marie Antoinette, her portraitist, the renowned beauty Elisabeth Louise Vigee-Le Brun and Count Alexis de Ligne, an aristocrat and political radical," according to press notes. "In the early years of their relationship with 'Toinette' both the talented painter and the politically passionate Count use the naive young Queen to further their ambitions. Both learn to love the woman they are exploiting even as their actions encourage the revolution that takes her life."

Marie Antoinette: The Color of Flesh made its Florida premiere at the Caldwell Studio Theatre this past winter. The New Jersey Repertory Theatre originally produced the work in 2003 prior to a New York bow at the 45th Street Theatre in 2007.

The drama has played international engagements in Spain and is eyeing an Australian run. Among the actors who have participated in readings of the work include Julia Roberts, Elisabeth Shue and Dustin Hoffman.

Gross has also penned screenplays for "No Escape," "Blind Man's Bluff" and the upcoming film "Galahad." He is currently in development for a new musical (with composer/lyricist Paul Aleman) based on the life of Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger.

Tickets are available by phoning (212) 239-6200 or by visiting telecharge.com. St. Luke's Theatre is located at 308 West 46th Street in Manhattan.
