Profiles Theatre Plans Tortuga, Thugs, Great Falls, Dissocia and Premiere of Graceland

By Kenneth Jones
24 Jul 2008

Chicago playwrights Jason Wells and Ellen Fairey will be represented in the 20th anniversary season of Profiles Theatre in Chicago, artistic directors Joe Jahraus and Darrell W. Cox announced.

Fairey's Graceland, one of five planned plays, will be a world premiere, opening in spring 2009. Two of the Profiles season's plays will be presented in repertory — The Thugs and Men of Tortuga.

In comedy-drama Graceland, according to the theatre, "everybody is self-destructing in this Chicago tale of loss, longing and high-speed fighter jets." Matt Miller will direct the production to run May 22-June 28, 2009.

Fairey's first full-length play, GIRL, 20, was named one of the Top Ten Most Promising Plays of 2006 by the Chicago Tribune after its world-premiere production by Serendipity Theatre. The production subsequently moved to Los Angeles, where it received rave reviews and was nominated for 2007-2008 LA Weekly Theatre Awards for Best Director (Matt Miller) and Best Ensemble.

Profiles Theatre will present the first full Chicago production of Wells' dark comedy Men of Tortuga (developed as part of Steppenwolf's New Plays Initiative) Oct. 3-Dec. 7; the Midwest premiere of the dark comedy The Thugs by Adam Bock Oct. 25-Dec. 14; the Midwest premiere of the road-trip play Great Falls by Lee Blessing (the first production since its world premiere at the Humana Festival this year) Jan. 9-March 1, 2009; and the U.S. premiere of The Wonderful World of Dissocia by acclaimed British playwright Anthony Neilson March 20-May 10, 2009.

The Thugs and Men of Tortuga will play in repertory Wednesdays through Sundays.

Profiles Theatre is located at 4147 N. Broadway, Chicago. For more information visit www.profilestheatre.org.
