Feinstein's "The Sinatra Project" Due in Stores in September

By Andrew Gans

Michael Feinstein

Cabaret favorite Michael Feinstein pays tribute to the late legendary crooner Frank Sinatra on his newest solo recording, which is due in stores in September.

Entitled "The Sinatra Project," the new CD from four-time Grammy nominee Feinstein is scheduled to arrive in stores Sept. 2 on the Concord Records label.

Among the Sinatra classics Feinstein interprets on the single CD are "Fools Rush In," "I've Got a Crush on You," "At Last Love," and "Exactly Like You" as well as "The Same, Hello, the Same Goodbye," which was penned by Alan and Marilyn Bergman for Sinatra. Feinstein also pays homage to Sinatra's contemporaries on the recording, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nat "King" Cole and Rosemary Clooney.

In a statement Feinstein said, "For years I've had the desire to celebrate Sinatra's musical sensibilities, but I have no desire to copy the classic songs that he rendered better than anyone else. I wanted to create an album that would explore his style of singing and his style of music." The recording's producer-arranger is Bill Elliott.

Feinstein and Elliot recorded the album as it would have been done 50 years ago. Elliott says in a statement, "We set up the recording sessions the way they were done back in the day, with the entire band in one room, drums next to the trumpets and saxes, using only a handful of microphones to capture the warmth and depth of the music."

Feinstein will kick off the release of the new recording with six performances at Feinstein's at Loews Regency in Manhattan Sept. 2-6.

A four-time Grammy nominee, Michael Feinstein is often credited with reinvigorating interest in the American popular song. The crooner has performed in concert halls around the world and on Broadway and now co-owns his own nightclub, Feinstein's at Loews Regency. His numerous solo recordings include "Michael and George: Feinstein Sings Gershwin," "Big City Rhythms" "Romance On Film, Romance On Broadway," "Michael Feinstein with The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra," "Only One Life: The Songs of Jimmy Webb" and "Hopeless Romantics."
