Broadway's To Be or Not to Be Will Now Begin Sept. 13

By Kenneth Jones
02 Sep 2008

Manhattan Theatre Club's new production of Nick Whitby's To Be or Not to Be — a comedy about a European theatre troupe shut down by the Nazis — will begin two days later than expected at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.

The production, which was originally scheduled to begin previews on Sept. 11, will now hold its first preview on Saturday evening, Sept. 13. Two performances will be missed to allow extra rehearsal time. After rehearsals began, there were two cast replacements.

The play, based on the 1942 Ernst Lubitsch motion picture "To Be or Not to Be," will open as scheduled on Oct. 2 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (formerly the Biltmore) at 261 W. 47th Street. This is MTC's Broadway home. The not-for-profit also presents Off-Broadway at New York City Center Stage I and II.

The production, directed by Casey Nicholaw (The Drowsy Chaperone, Monty Python's Spamalot) features Peter Benson, Robert Dorfman, Steve Kazee, Peter Maloney, Jan Maxwell, Michael McCarty, Kristine Nielsen, Brandon Perler, David Rasche, Rocco Sisto, Jimmy Smagula, and Marina Squerciati.

The performance schedule is Sept. 13-14: Saturday at 8 PM. Sunday at 2 PM & 7 PM; Sept. 15-28: Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM, Sunday at 7 PM. Matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM; Sept. 29-Nov. 23: Tuesday at 7 PM, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 PM, Sunday at 7 PM, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM.
